President’s Comment: Will Latest U.S. Law Lead to Successful Schools in STEM?

The Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) is a monumental piece of legislation that will change the landscape of K-12 education for a long time to come. Most significantly, the new law calls for a shift from federally mandated to state-designed accountability systems. It also expands the previous version’s narrow definition of school success based primarily on math and English language arts test scores. ESSA may potentially breathe new life into K-12 schooling in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.
