Half of Americans will experience mental, behavioral, or substance abuse disorders in their lifetime, with the first onset in childhood or adolescence. The Board on Children, Youth, and Families (BCYF) of the Institute of Medicine (IOM) and the National Research Council (NRC) will establish a Forum on Promoting Children’s Cognitive, Affective, and Behavioral Health (C-CAB Forum). The Forum—which is supported by various private and public funders—will discuss ways to strengthen the connections between research, policy, and practice in mental health. A major goal of the Forum is addressing the gaps between research on mental health programs and their implementation in practice. BCYF will convene workshops that include representatives from multiple sectors such as academia, federal agencies, professional organizations, and philanthropic institutions over three years. This award will support the first year of the Forum.
The Board on Children, Youth, and Families will establish a Forum on Promoting Children’s Cognitive, Affective, and Behavioral Health (C-CAB Health Forum). The Forum members and participants will engage in dialogue and discussion to connect the prevention, treatment, and implementation sciences with settings where children are seen and cared for, including primary health care, schools, preschools and child care, social service and child welfare, juvenile justice, family court, military, and community based organizations, and to create systems that are effective and affordable in addressing children’s needs
