Increasing Student Engagement: Integrating Research, Policy and Practice

The goal of this Fellowship is to learn more about the policymaking process in order to write research that is more accessible and usable to legislators.

Jennifer Fredricks is a professor of human development and the director of the Holleran Center for Community Action and Public Policy at Connecticut College. Although an influential researcher of engagement in school and out of school contexts, she has a more limited understanding of the legislative decision making process and the day-to-day operations of advocacy organizations. Therefore, her fellowship will spent at Connecticut Voices for Children, an advocacy organization that helps shape state education policy through high quality research and analysis, policy development, and strategic communications and advocacy. During her fellowship, Fredericks will follow a relevant education issue as it wends its way through the policy-making process. She will be responsible for all activities related to the specific issue, including policy analysis, background research, issue briefs, and working with stakeholders and the media.
