Figure Skating in Harlem (FSH) provides girls ages 6-18 with educational, health, and wellness services, along with instruction in figure skating. FSH wants to improve its academic services, which are aligned with New York State Common Core Standards, but are primarily writing- and communication-focused and lacking in a science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) component. FSH proposes to hire a specialist to create a STEM curriculum that will integrate elements of figure skating with fundamentals of biology, physics, math, and engineering. The consultant will train FSH staff to deliver the new curriculum. FSH will also invite visiting experts to discuss topics such as nutrition, diet, and STEM careers.
This grant will be used to integrate science, technology, engineering, and math into Figure Skating lessons in Harlem’s curriculum and program activities.
