Sunnyside Community Services (SCS) provides a range of services to children, adults, and families in Queens. SCS operates out-of-school time (OST) programs at two elementary schools, offering students in kindergarten through sixth grade with tutoring, homework help, and recreational activities. SCS wants to provide a more standardized literacy curriculum and will implement The Comic Book Project for third to fifth graders in its after-school programs. Over a 20-week period, students engage in a process of planning, writing, and designing their own 8-page comic book. Youth build writing and comprehension skills and staff will be trained to more systematically track and improve student progress.
The grant will be used to provide the Comic Book Project literacy curriculum to third, fourth, and fifth graders who participate in the after-school programs.
