Latino/a parents are more likely than their non-Latino/a White counterparts to report elevated parenting stress due to socioecological stressors that compound normative parenting challenges. Available programs to reduce parenting stress rely largely on approaches that have shown mixed effectiveness and do not consider the multilevel impact of socioecological stressors. This project develops and tests a program to reduce parenting stress in Latino/a parents of adolescents. Interrupting the progression of parenting related stress can build more resilient family systems and support the psychosocial health of Latino/a adolescents. Galvan will confirm a conceptual model of parenting stress and its impact on the psychosocial well-being of Latino/a adolescents, co-design an intervention to reduce Latino/a parenting stress, and assess the efficacy of the parenting stress reduction intervention. Luz Garcini, Associate Professor of Psychological Sciences at Rice University, will provide mentorship in health equity and participatory methods. Oswald Moreno, Associate Professor of Psychology at Virginia Commonwealth University, will provide mentorship in intervention and prevention science.
Can a stress reduction intervention increase psychosocial well-being for Latino/a parents and in turn increase their adolescents’ psychosocial health?
