What predicts what children understand about the everyday economic world? What is the role of children’s family and community-related experience in the development of their economic understanding? The investigators will interview children of recent immigrants and the parents themselves about their cultural beliefs, values, attitudes, and behavior patterns. Two corresponding samples, each consisting of 120 youth (ages 11-12) and 120 parents will be interviewed to determine to what extent such beliefs and experiences influence everyday economic understanding. This research will inform policy and practice regarding how parents, families, and others can help children of immigrants be more knowledgeable and effective in dealing with their everyday economic world.
