Grant

New York City Reducing Inequality Network (RIN)

This grant will provide an additional five years of funding to the Reducing Inequality Network, which supports sociology and social work doctoral students from underrepresented backgrounds whose research focuses on reducing inequality.

In 2018, the Foundation awarded New York University an Officers’ Discretionary Fund grant to establish the Reducing Inequality Network (RIN), a program supporting sociology and social work doctoral students from underrepresented backgrounds whose research focuses on reducing inequality. The RIN, which comprises Columbia University, the Graduate Center at the City University of New York, and New York University, provides participating students with financial support for research, social support and mentoring opportunities, and connections across the three universities. In addition to the award from the Foundation, each participating university contributes funds to the RIN to expand its impact and reach. Since its inception, the RIN has successfully supported 17 students across five cohorts and expanded the number of core faculty members and the diversity in rank, research areas, and racial background. The current award will support the activities of the RIN for another five years and leverage additional funding from the universities to support the development of early-career researchers from underrepresented backgrounds who are poised to make an impact in reducing inequality.
