Recent federal legislation calls for child welfare agencies and Medicaid to develop mechanisms for assuring youth in foster care receive appropriate health and mental health services, including medications. This legislation provides an opportunity for researchers to partner with policymakers, but an in-depth understanding of how public systems incorporate research into their decision-making is essential. This project will conduct critical preliminary work in preparation for the development of “linkage and exchange” strategies between researchers and relevant stakeholders, including child welfare and Medicaid, that promote evidence-based policy-making for the provision and oversight of behavioral health services for youth in foster care.
