School administrators are increasingly turning to restorative approaches to discipline as an alternative to punitive measures that contribute to negative outcomes for students. Restorative approaches aim to strengthen relationships, increase students’ investment in the community, and hold students accountable to one another and to the community. Growing evidence shows the potential for restorative approaches to reduce racial inequality in school suspensions and to provide developmentally-appropriate responses to conflict.
The grant will be used to develop, pilot, and codify a research-based “Restorative Coaching” model and manual to assist schools in implementing these approaches to discipline.
