Out-of-School Influences on Black-White Test Score Gaps for 4th and 8th Graders

What explains recent trends in black-white test score gaps for 4th and 8th graders and what role do out-of-school factors play?

This question is important and timely because the convergence in black-white test score gaps for school-aged children and youth that began in the 1960s stopped in the mid-1980s, and yet researchers do not know what factors explain these trends. This study will examine whether trends in the quality of home environments and out-of-school activities are linked to racial achievement gaps
