How does participation in community-based organizations affect the development and adaptation of immigrant and second-generation youth? And what processes and practices occur within successful community-based organizations serving youth in immigrant families? Previous studies provide an understanding of how family background, peers, and the larger society shape the lives of immigrant and second-generation children. The researcher will add to past research by studying how community contexts influence youth in immigrant families. In particular, a focus on community-based organizations is important for immigrant populations because such communities often do not have access to mainstream institutions. This project will contribute to a better understanding of the role of community-based organizations in immigrant communities and will also help build a general theoretical framework to understand adaptation processes among immigrant and second-generation youth.
