This year’s meeting of the American Sociological Association centers on the theme “Intersectional Solidarities: Building Communities of Hope, Justice, and Joy.” Noting the motivations of many sociologists to “use sociology to make more just communities and societies,” ASA President Joya Misra writes that this theme calls on sociologists to “not only understand structural inequalities, but to intervene in socio-political struggles.”
Our standpoint—and the animating feature of our focus on reducing inequality—is that sociology has done a remarkable job of building understanding of inequality, but it has done less well at “identifying the specific programs, policies, and practices that must be undertaken to change the course of inequality in the United States and elsewhere.” We are enlivened by what’s possible when we come together as discipline to shift our gaze in this direction.
We remain optimistic that the social sciences can and will contribute to new ideas for social change, and we hope to play our part in nurturing that work now and in the years ahead.
