President’s Comment: Will Latest U.S. Law Lead to Successful Schools in STEM?
In December 2015, Congress passed and President Obama signed into law the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), a new version of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act. ESSA, which replaces the No Child Left Behind Act, is a monumental piece of legislation that will change the landscape of K-12 education for a long time to come. Most significantly, the new law calls for a shift from federally mandated to state-designed accountability systems. It also expands the previous version’s narrow definition of school success based primarily on math and English language arts test scores. ESSA may potentially breathe new life into K-12 schooling in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). In Will Latest U.S. Law Lead to Successful Schools in STEM? published in September’s Science Magazine, I discuss the opportunities states will have to improve STEM participation and learning in all schools.
