This grant will enable graduate students of color to attend the American Sociological Association Pre-Conference on Race, Racism, and Reducing Inequality organized by the Sociology of Education Section. This pre-conference will focus on identifying and discussing ways to reduce racial inequality in education through research, partnerships with policy and practice, and mentoring of graduate students and early-career scholars. Sessions will include three panel discussions, which will focus on how sociologists of education can study race and racism to ensure the reduction of racism and racial inequality in education, inform public opinion about issues of race and racism and act outside of academia to ensure the reduction of racial inequality in education, and mentor graduate students in ways that disrupt racial inequalities in their institutions and the broader field. Funds from this award will primarily be used to provide stipends to cover the travel costs for up to 17 graduate student attendees who represent a diverse range of institutions, stages of graduate degree completion, ethnic backgrounds, and genders.
