Improving the Relationship between Youth and Mentors

Friends of the Children NY provides full-time mentors (called “Friends”) to work one-on-one with severely at-risk children from kindergarten through high school.

Friends of the Children NY provides full-time mentors (called “Friends”) to work one-on-one with severely at-risk children from kindergarten through high school. The organization observed that as the youth grow older, the academic help they need increases. The mentor’s role changes from one that focuses on social and emotional development to one that focuses on academic tutoring, which puts a strain on the mentoring relationship. To address this, Friends of the Children NY will create a volunteer tutoring program comprised of tutors who are not also Friends.
