Grant

Facilitating Use of Evidence-Based Observational and Improvement Tools in K-12

This grant will increase understanding of districts’ concerns about using classroom observation measures in teacher evaluation systems.

Specifically, the award will support a two-day meeting between University of Virginia (UVA) researchers and school district staff from different cities, including Arlington, Baltimore, and New York, to clarify barriers to adoption of the CLASS, an evidence-based observational tool used to assess teacher performance. The Foundation has previously provided support to improve the secondary school version of the tool. Following the meeting, the investigator and colleagues will write a policy brief summarizing issues that need to be addressed to facilitate the use of evidence-based observational tools in teacher evaluation and professional development systems.
